In situations of joint custody, parties must be able to discuss all major decisions regarding the children and this can be problematic where there is a substantiated history of abuse by one spouse against the other. No judge would force a survivor of domestic abuse to interact with their abuser and would also be hesitant to expose a child to such parental interactions. As always in family law, the best interests of the children are paramount and that means every action you take within the family context can be considered in relation to their well-being for the purposes of custody and access.

It depends on how well each party argues its side, as well as on the evidence they present. It is definitely wise to have a skilled lawyer represent you or at least guide you through your case. You can start by talking to us at Holcomb Law today. Tap To Call Us. Is It Proven As Adultery? I cannot tell you how many times a client has looked at me with shock when I tell them that yes, even if your wife had an affair and even though it is her pressing for the divorce, a court will still award her an equitable share of marital assets.

New York law lists the specific factors a court can consider when dividing the property and awarding maintenance. Noticeably absent from these factors is fault. In fact, in New York, appellate courts have ruled it is reversible error to consider fault in dividing the property. There are rare and specific occasions when something like an affair during the marriage may have an effect on the distribution of assets or maintenance for example, if the cheating spouse spent marital money to carry on the affair , but those cases are few and far between.

Generally speaking, courts do not want to get involved in whose fault it was the marriage broke down, and it has very little effect on how property and money is distributed in a divorce. In New York, there are two types of custody: legal and physical.

Physical custody comes in three forms:. Unless there are extremely compelling issues in a case, such as one parent has serious mental health issues, there has been a history of abuse or severe drug addiction, sole custody will not be considered. I highly recommend parties do not even request sole custody from the court. This is because when awarding custody, the only question the court has to answer is what is in the best interest of the child. However, there are factors the court uses to make this determination, and paramount among those factors is whether a parent will foster a healthy relationship with the other parent.

As if the birth of a new Kardashian baby wasn't big enough news, her birth coincided with news that Tristan cheated on Khloe in October , when she was 3 months pregnant. TMZ reported that Tristan was caught making out with and 'motorboating' two women at a hookah lounge. Given the birth of their baby, we can't help but wonder whether Tristan's adulterous ways could have any impact on his relationship with his daughter.

If Khloe and Tristan lived in Ontario, the answer would generally be no - adultery would not have a significant impact on child custody or access.

This will make a saturated solution. Hang your pipe cleaner shape in the jar so that it is completely covered in the solution. Let it sit overnight. Gently remove your now crystal-covered shape in the morning and let it dry by setting it in a dry glass. Optional: To make colored crystals, use colored pipe cleaners and add drops of food coloring to the solution in step five. To make your snowflakes glow in the dark, paint the pipe cleaner shape with glow-in-the-dark paint in step one and let it dry completely before continuing.

Once the crystals have dried, cut off the string and tie a ribbon to one point of your crystallized shape to make a Christmas tree ornament! These ornaments are fairly sturdy and make lovely Christmas gifts for friends, teachers, or family members. As in the rock candy project, you made a saturated solution of Borax, which is a chemical that forms crystals when the conditions are right.

By mixing it with hot water and letting it cool and having something for the Borax solute molecules to attach to the pipe cleaner shape , you gave the solution the right conditions to grow crystals! Once the crystals started to grow on your shape, more and more crystals formed around them. Ice crystals that real snowflakes are made of are not quite like these Borax crystals, but they do look sort of similar and they both are pretty and sparkle when light shines on them.

Real ice crystals are made only of water. The difference is that they are formed when water vapor in clouds freezes and falls to the ground as snowflakes! Frost is another form of ice crystals that you might see on windows and grass on cold mornings. To learn more about snow and ice crystals, check out our Snow and Hail article. How can you tell the difference between sugar and salt crystals? Of course if you tasted each of them, you would know right away which one was salt and which was sugar because they taste very different.

In this project you will find out how to tell sugar and salt apart just by looking at them! Use your fingers to spread the grains apart a little so you can see them better. Now look closely at the grains on each sheet of paper and compare how they look. Do you notice any differences between the two? Now use your magnifying glass to look up close at a few grains of the salt.

What shape are they? Are they all about the same shape? Draw their shape in the correct spot on the worksheet. Now take a look up close at a few grains of the sugar.

Are they a different shape from the salt crystals? Do you notice anything else that makes them look different from the salt? Draw their shape on the worksheet. Sugar and salt grains are actually tiny crystals. Can you tell if the picture to the left is salt or sugar? If you were to make a saturated solution of salt and one of sugar, you would be able to see them grow into much larger crystals, but they would always have the same shape as these tiny crystals do!

The salt crystals are cube shaped like dice and have six sides. The sugar crystals are very rough looking and are shaped more like rectangles with pointed ends. Most of the crystals are the same shape and size and look very similar to each other, but you probably saw a few crystals on your paper that looked a little different. Those crystals probably had pieces broken off of them, or there might even be more than one crystal stuck together, making them look different from the others.

Also, the coloring of the crystals is a little different. Sugar crystals look very clear and sparkly while salt is duller and looks more white-colored or frosted. There are many factors that affect crystal growth, so crystal projects are great for scientific experimentation and science fairs. For example, many crystals are formed because of evaporation. Temperature and humidity are two things that affect the rate of evaporation, so you could design an experiment to see how different temperatures and humidity levels affect the rate of crystal growth and the size of crystals.

There are many substances that can be used to grow crystals. You could design an experiment to test which one grows larger crystals under the same conditions. Try alum, Epsom salt, table salt, sugar, baking soda, or non-household chemicals like copper sulfate blue crystals and potassium ferricyanide red crystals ; adult supervision is required for the last two.

After you finish this article, we invite you to read other articles to assist you in teaching science at home on the Homeschool Hub, which consists of over free science articles! Home Science Tools offers a wide variety of science products and kits.

Over the days when you left your sticks in the sugar solution some of the water molecules evaporated meaning that there was less water in your solution to mix with the sugar.

The sugar molecules in the solution join together when they bump into each other and start to form crystals. Crystals form best when there is a surface to grow on, such as the surface of the solutions the sugar layer you had to remove or the stick in the solution. Sugar molecules continued to join on to the crystals, like building blocks, until the end of the experiment when you removed the crystal stick from the solution.

You will need: Measuring cup Water Sugar 6 plastic cups Saucepan Food colouring Kebab or lolly sticks Clothes pegs Spoon String optional Method: Add 3 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water then stir until dissolved, then add any food colouring of your choice. Make sure your sugar has fully dissolved, then leave to cool for a few minutes before adding it into the plastic cup.

Then get your stick and insert the end in the middle of a clothes peg, then clip another clothes peg at the end of the first peg. Place the stick in the sugar solution with the pegs lying across the top of the cup. STEP 2 - Heat the water over a flame. If you are going to make salt crystals you need only heat the water to around degrees. If you are going to make sugar crystals, bring the water up to boiling. STEP 3 - Pour the sugar or salt into the water and stir. Keep adding more until it will no longer dissolve.

Then add just a little more water and continue to heat and stir until all the material disappears. STEP 4 - Turn off the burner and let the water cool to room temperature.

STEP 5 - Pour the contents into the paper or plastic cups.

Farmer cheese here in NE Pa. We are lucky. Do you happen to have any Polish recipes on making Farmers Cheese from scratch? It is very similar to ricotta, Hanna. My Babci made us a version that just included the green onions and plenty of salt and pepper at room temperature served over boiled potatoes. Since I cannot normally get the farmers cheese here in Colorado Springs, I use cottage cheese and leave out the sour cream.

Thank you for keeping these foods alive. Hi My mom Polish descent taught me to eat it just like you said: sliced with salt and pepper. We would get some with caraway in it as well. Brings back good memories. That was just a mistake on my part; thanks for catching it! You could certainly experiment with other spices like marjoram. My mom's method for Homemade Farmer's Cheese. Heat 1 gallon milk over medium-low until you see hundreds little bubbles appear, but do not bring to a boil.

Stir occasionally to prevent the milk from scorching at the bottom of the pot. Then stir again. Remove from heat to cool to room temperature.

Line a sieve or a colander with a flour sack towel. Slowly pour the cheese into the cloth to catch the curds. Gather the cloth around cheese and squeeze it as much as you can to get all the whey out. When you start seeing white-ish liquid coming out instead of lime color, you can stop there. People use whey for bread, different cooking and gardening. If you enjoyed the recipe and would like to republish it on your own site, please re-write it in your own words, and link back to my site and recipe page.

We use different brands of ultra-pasteurized for many years and always a success. Also, like mentioned in the post, Heinz distilled white vinegar works the best. Other brands or flavors might provide slightly different results.

Hope this answers your question. I make your cheese times per month because we like to snack on it for breakfast especially, and I have used brands Horizon, Organic Valley, O organics, Darigold and these are all ultra-pasteurized and the cheese always turns out beautifully.

This is my favorite recipe that never dissapoints. Thank you for sharing that with us, Grace! Those are great choices for cheese making. Hi Betty! I personally never used lemon juice for cheese making, but my mom did and it also works. You will just have a slight lemon aroma in cheese. My mother and grandmother always made farmers cheese.

Somehow they were not able to explain the recipe to me. This is perfect. As easy as it gets, and excellent results. I am addicted to this cheese! Thank you for posting the recipe. I made it the other morning and it was so easy. It came out great. From what I know, people in Ukraine always use raw milk for cheese and it always works.

Hope this helps! Please tell me what is the difference between farmers cheese and ricotta cheese,it seems that is the same way I make ricotta cheese. Hi Camille! Farmers cheese is more dry and comes with bigger crumbs, while store-bought ricotta is very mild and has very tiny crumbs. Can I add salt to this? If so, when would you suggest? Would I use Kosher or fine sea salt?

Many thanks for your response. Hi Karen! You would usually add sugar and salt in pierogies and you want to use a little bit of fine salt definitely not kosher , depends on the amount of cheese.

Maybe these two recipes would help you decide check the filling ingredients. How far down can I scale this recipe? I would like to make no more than 2 cups at a time. Would it still work? Hi Lisa! You can simply half the recipe to get 2 cups of cheese.

Just to clarify, that would be 2 cups crumbled cheese, so not packed like brown sugar. The easiest homemade cheese recipe I have tried.

For years I spent days making cheese and it needed my constant attention to make sure everything went okay.

When I tried your recipe, I scratched off the one I did for years and now I only make your way. We like to enjoy it for breakfast very often. Amazing recipe! Thank you for sharing that with us, Candace! Hello Olga. Thank you for the straightforward information on farmers cheese.

Good to know it can be frozen. I will try the nalisniki recipe, sounds good. Did I do something wrong or maybe I pressed it too long before eating. Also can I make this with goat milk?

Will definitely do it again. Thank you.? His Ludmilla! There are 2 reasons why it might turn our a bit too dry. I only press until the clear whey comes out. If you see white liquid starting to come out when you press, then you would stop. Hi Eva! I have not tried with skim milk, therefore I cannot say without testing it.

The fattier the milk, the more cheese. If you do decide to try from skim milk, please share with us how it turned out. Grandma made cheese pierogi and now I can.. We went to the dairy this morning and picked up several gallons Of raw milk. We wanted to use the freshest we could get. I added a little extra vinegar to get that watercolor. Thank you so much. Thank you for sharing that with us. I hope your company enjoyed the cheese too! I made this cheese and tried to eat it on toast with butter and a slice of tomato.

It was really good and the cheese was easy to make. Thank you for the cheese recipe. Loved it. So easy! But I did use a thermometer to make sure the milk was heated properly to F. I added a bit of salt for the only reason that I like it a bit salty, just a teaspoon.

Even better, almost any kind of milk will make cheese, except for ultra-pasteurized. During the ultra-pasteurization process, proteins are damaged in such a way that they won't reliably form curds. You can use raw milk to make cheese, and while it's not always a good idea for rennet-set cheeses where you won't heat the milk nearly as high as for queso fresco , in this recipe you will heat the milk to the point of pasteurizing it, rendering it totally safe.

So let's actually do this thing! I start by heating milk in a pot, stirring more or less constantly, and watching the temperature on my thermometer. It's easy to scorch the milk at this stage, which will give your cheese an acrid, bitter flavor, so use a heavy-bottomed pot if possible and stir gently and constantly.

Food safety isn't an issue and extensive testing has shown us that there's virtually no difference in the amount and texture of curd produced within that broader temperature range. Next, I add my acid. Here, I opted to use lemon juice, but vinegar would also work in its place—it all comes down to the kind of flavor you're looking for.

Lemon juice will add a citrusy tang to the cheese, whereas distilled vinegar will leave you with a more neutral flavor. Working one tablespoon at a time and stirring gently after each addition, I continue pouring in the acid until the curds separate from the whey. It will look like soft, curly white clumps suspended in a clearish liquid, and it will be sudden. Trust me, you'll know when it happens.

Once they've separated, take a break. Let the pot sit uncovered for at least five minutes and up to 20 minutes to complete the separation process. Now it's draining time! Ladle the curds into a cheesecloth-lined colander. If you don't have cheesecloth, you can also use a clean sackcloth dishtowel.

The finer weave means the draining will take a few minutes longer, but the cloth is reusable and ultimately cheaper if you plan to make cheese frequently.

If you want to save the whey, place the colander over a large bowl. I like to use it for marinating or braising meats—the enzymes in the whey have an almost magical tenderizing effect on meats and add a nice depth of flavor. For those same reasons, it's also good for soaking grains. It can even be used in place of water for bread recipes.

Some people even feed it to their pets, but I've found my dog can only stomach it in small doses although she goes crazy for it and would drink as much as I let her. If you're just in this for the cheese, though, you can drain your curds over the sink.

Either way, allow the curds to strain for a good 20 minutes for pressed cheese, or a full hour for fresh curds though not true ricotta, those fresh curds are in fact what most of us know as ricotta these days. To salt the cheese, sprinkle a quarter teaspoon of salt over the curds and gently stir it in.

For pressed cheese, gather the curds into a ball in the middle of your cheesecloth and press them into a hockey-puck shape. Then, tie the cloth around the cheese, place bound cheese back into the colander, and put some kind of weight on top—I like to use a small plate weighed down by a large mason jar of water, but several cans of food would work, or really anything that weighs a few pounds.

Let your set-up rest for an hour and a half, or until the cheese has reached your preferred texture—the longer you wait, the firmer it will get. It'll keep for up to a week in the refrigerator, but it's best used right away. There you have it—everything you need to know okay, and maybe a tiny bit more to make a basic cheese. Super cool.

Ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying. When using epoxy, it can be a helpful process to add a second layer, but you want to make sure to follow the correct procedures. With most coating epoxies, if you are trying to build up to your desired thickness, it is recommended to pour your second coat once the first coat is tacky to the touch usually hours.

What epoxy cure time can I expect? Epoxy cure time is typically seven days. Of course, there are variations, but if you want a rule of thumb, one week is your answer. While it takes seven days for epoxy to cure, your floor may be dry enough to walk on after 12 hours or so and ready for light use after 24 hours.

Generally, a polyurethane floor coating is highly flexible and elastic, while epoxy flooring is harder and more brittle. Some projects are more porous than others and may need help spreading the epoxy effectively. Sand the entire piece evenly. Skip to content Can you put epoxy over varnish?

Does anyone know anything about applying Polyurethane over Epoxy? I recently poured resin on a table top but some areas were m Applied over epoxy, they perform beautifully together and outlast either coating used by itself. In new construction or when existing trim is removed for refinishing, we recommend that you encapsulate the piece with two to three coats of epoxy on all sides prior to installation and prior to applying varnish.

Three coats on surfaces that will be sanded. This seals the wood, effectively protecting it from water. You can install the trim with commonly used bedding compounds or glue it in place with epoxy. To eliminate places where water can get in, coat all drilled installation and hardware attachment holes with epoxy just prior to running the screws in.

Wood surfaces completely coated in epoxy and protected with varnish or two-part polyurethane clear exterior finishes significantly outlast traditionally applied and maintained varnishes. Many people refinish their wood trim in place by stripping the old finish, sanding and applying two to three coats of epoxy before applying varnish.

For this method to work, it is important that the bedding compound beneath the trim be in good shape so water does not find its way into the wood behind the coating. The undercut area should be free of all bedding materials, leaving the wood and gelcoat clean and abraded.

Strip the trim of all old finishes and dry it well before coating the undercut area with unthickened epoxy. Then fill with epoxy that has been thickened with Colloidal Silica and colored with wood sanding dust. Apply two or three coats of epoxy and eventually protect the trim with three or more coats of varnish.

It is important to eliminate places where moisture can find its way into the wood. This includes applying epoxy to screw holes prior to running the screw in place. If you will need to remove the screw in the future, you can apply a wax or mold release to the screws. If you forget to apply mold release to the fasteners, you can use a soldering iron to heat the fastener head for removal.

We recommend sealing holes with epoxy because varnish typically breaks down first near hardware. This occurs because moisture finds its way in through screw holes as a result of thermal cycling. Sunlight warms the wood, causing air in the wood to expand and create pressure. Do this until you are satisfied that the surface feels and looks fair. According to the coating instructions, sand with the appropriate sandpaper depending on the type of coating you want to use. You should note that your paint will adhere to the surface depending on its mechanical grip on the surfaces facilitated by the final sanding.

However, if you prefer primers and high solids coatings, go for grit sandpaper. Finally, consider finishing with grits between since finer grits than this will not result in enough mechanical grip for your paint or varnish.

Tip: You can choose to use wet sanding since it will reduce the sanding dust. Doing this will also make step 2 not necessary. After sanding, thoroughly rinse the surface with fresh water.

Note: If the cleaning water bends or forms a fishing eye at any point on the surface, that point is not even. Wipe and dry the specific area, then wet sand to eliminate the contamination. Do you want to prevent any chances of contamination to the epoxy surface before applying the final coating? Then, ensure you coat within 24 hours of the final sanding. Yes, you can use a brush to apply epoxy resin. However, I suggest you use a bristle brush or a nap roller for the best results.

If you prefer sanding before application, go for a chip brush. The only drawback is that bristle brushes can result in uneven application.

Such will happen when the bristles get weighed down with the product. For the best results, consider using a foam roller brush. Even though both varnish and lacquer are durable and dependable, they have some distinguishing factors. Varnish is a hard, transparent, protective finish that you can use to protect your wood.

Varnishes are essential in woodworking since they always highlight the natural beauty of different wood types. Unlike varnish, which is transparent, lacquer comes in different colors and degrees of opacity. Even so, it leaves a hard glossy finish as varnish does. Lacquer provides a range of sheen levels from high gloss to ultra matte.

Does cutting down the length of the putter mess with the weight?

I've always used a 35" putter even though I am not a tall person at all. I'm only 5'5", but I always just choked down to the end of th grip and putted like that. I've gotten used to it and it works. However, I went into the pro shop at my home course and they had an old seemore putter that was cut down to 32".

When I held it, it just felt right. One of the guys in the pro shop said he doesn't like cutting down putters because it messes with the weight of the putter.

I would like to get my putter cut down to the same length, but not if it's going to change the weight of the putter. SeeMoreGuy They Make 'em. I Buy 'em.

With such a significant change of 3" my guess is that would alter the weight but I will defer to the more experienced in this forum. Why not just grab the used Seemore putter? Those with adjustable weights may or may not provide different weights; they'd prefer to sell you the weight kit. I have cut down lots of putters and didn't adjust the weight; didn't feel any different to me but others may feel a huge difference.

Member: MGS Hitsquad since Ping uses the same head for 33,34,35 inch putters. You can add weight to the head, but most players won't feel much of a difference unless they are a handsy putter. It's not like a full swing club. Depending on what grip you have, you can also change the feel back towards standard by installing a lighter grip. But for the other golfers , including myself, could definitely feel the difference by simply chopping the OEM putter shorter.

For me, it'll come in the difference in feel, which will influence the distance control. Also aim, for I use a modified swing gate type of putting stroke which has a slight curve from back and through the golf ball. I can putt with just about anything, from the modern putters all types to the early 20th century butter knife to using the leading edge of an iron never liked the fairway wood for balance preference.

It really is how long would it take for you to adjust to the new feel. If you're not playing competition golf the week after you made the modification I also know a few golfers whom claims that they must have the same feel in a putter to be able to score well. Cutting two inches off a 35" putter just happens to result in a feel I am very comfortable with.

Anyone elses mileage may vary! My question would be if a clubfitter added weight down the shaft or in the form of a tip pin to a putter to compensate wouldn't it affect the face balance of the putter?

January 5, That makes sense to me. Numbers never lie! NCGolfer January 5, Just to add to the conversation. Don't be afraid to cut it down a bit to see if you feel better with a shorter putter. I went to a local shop and played around with 33" and 34" putters. Eventually I settled on a 33" even though I'm a standard 6' tall.

What I did do is add the heaviest weights to my Monza Corza. I didn't have to, but it felt better. I liked the feel of the heavier putter with a short shaft, so I went with it. Just give it a try and you'll quickly find out if it isn't for you. Awards, Achievements, and Accolades.

January 9, I believe that your putter head will then be too heavy for the length of shaft.. I could be wrong but the weights are different. Say a 35" putter will have a heavier head than a 33" putter will I thought about doing that but was advised not to I trust the person that told me, he has been in the club making business at a major retailer for quite some time.. Good luck. The trend is going with heavier heads on putters, plus and heavier to calm the stroke.

Cutting two inches off a 35 inch putter would make for a whippy feeling club for most players. While it is correct that a heavier weight head is needed on a shorter shaft to maintain swingweight, the majority of manufacturers in the world are not manufacturing different weight heads when they offer multiple lengths. Because swingweight in a putter is an uninteresting number it comes down to personal preference as to what feels right to the individual. Scotty Cameron does indeed make different weight heads to create different length putters but he is the exception not the rule.

While Scotty Cameron putters tend to run in the D6 swingweight as the norm it is not to say that C4 is not what I putt the best with. Cobra LTD Pro 9. I cut em even shorter to Shaft taper is definitely a problem, though, as mentioned above. Other thing to look out for is the lie, but that can be adjusted. My guy moves the shaft bands for me, if they can be saved. If it's a parallel. That'll save your shaft band, if that matters to you.

Just measure the shaft two inches up from the hosel insertion point and if it's the same diameter there as it is right at the hosel, then this is a valid option. Unlike a shaft on any other club where tipping 2" would change the flex drastically, for a putter, I'd say this would be fine. You can post now and register later. This survey only looked at people in the United States. Another Gallup poll from surveyed people from around the world and resulted in similar findings. Culture may affect this threshold. Depending on your culture, you may find happiness in different things than someone with different cultural values.

These studies and surveys suggest that money may help buy happiness when used to meet basic needs. Access to healthcare, nutritious foods, and a home where you feel safe can improve mental and physical health and may, in some cases, lead to increased happiness. Once basic needs are met, however, the happiness a person can gain from money may grow stagnant. Results from a survey of research on this topic suggest that spending money on experiences rather than tangible goods and giving to others with no thought of reward results in the greatest feelings of happiness.

This could take the form of going to a concert instead of buying a new TV, or buying someone you love a thoughtful gift rather than indulging yourself in an impulse buy. The authors called this the appraisal-tendency framework ATF.

Results from a more recent study that looked at happiness in European populations points to a much lower dollar amount being equated to happiness: 27, euros a year.

This may have to do with relative costs of living in the United States compared to Europe. Healthcare and higher education are often less expensive in Europe than in the United States.

The researchers also mention several other cultural factors that may contribute to the lower correlation of money to happiness in these countries. Money may not buy happiness, but there are some things you can do to try to increase happiness. Money keeps buying happiness, even for the affluent. The incorrect lesson that money buys happiness, especially programmed into us early in life or when we are vulnerable, can be hard to shake. For the most part, remediating the small size of your TV screen or the low horsepower of your car has no effect on your unhappiness whatsoever. This is not to say that people who make more than six digits should stop working hard— earning success through work has been shown to bring happiness at all financial levels.

Quite the contrary, as spending more time fruitlessly chasing well-being up the income curve often means spending less time on love. Y ou might be tempted to throw up your hands in exasperation at these findings. Luckily, there is a loophole. Research shows that how the wealthier among us spend their money makes all the difference for their well-being.

Specifically, spending money to have experiences, buying time, and giving money away to help others all reliably raise happiness.

Read: Who actually feels satisfied about money? The key factor connecting all those approaches is other people. If you buy an experience, whether it be a vacation or just a dinner out, you can raise your happiness if you share it with someone you love.

Even low-key activities have the potential to shape our sense of identity through new memories and connections. Before leaving LA, she donated or sold more than 90 percent of her possessions. Today, everything she owns fits in two suitcases.

There are tradeoffs, of course: convenience, comfort, roots. A life decentered from stuff has realigned her days around experiences. Some of her favorite memories in Bali are simply getting from point A to point B. An associate philosophy professor at the University of Oxford, William MacAskill helped found the effective altruism movement.

MacAskill credits effective altruism with helping him emerge from a sustained bout of depression. He initially sought out treatment because his productivity had flat-lined, and he felt a moral responsibility to continue working toward a purpose larger than himself. The act of spending money on other people could be beneficial in itself.

The same effect does not exist when people spent more money on themselves. This has yet to turn us into a nation of donors. In the US, people give, on average, between 2 percent and 5 percent of their income to charity each year, which remains fairly consistent across income levels, Norton says. A rough idea of how many platelets are circulating in the bloodstream platelet count can be made using a sample of blood. However in the UK we simplify this by describing a platelet count of, say, rather than , In most cases of ITP the platelet count is less than What is immune thrombocytopenic purpura?

The majority of children with "chronic" ITP will still have some recovery of the platelet count at a later date and the majority of younger children will still completely recover after a few years even if the ITP is still present at 6 months.

How common is ITP and who does it affect? About four in every , children develop ITP each year. There seem to be two groups who develop ITP: young children and young adults.

It is more common in girls than boys. What are the symptoms of ITP? Most children with a platelet count of under 20 will have petechiae pinprick blood spots under the skin and limited bruising.

Bruising most commonly follows minor knocks "easy bruising" but may also occur spontaneously without trauma. Common sites of spontaneous bleeding are the gums and nose. Girls may be troubled with heavy periods. Less common and potentially serious are spontaneous bleeds occurring from the gut or brain. Data from international studies suggests that the risk of serious bleeds is about 3 in children and the risk of brain bleeds is about 1 in children. These bleeds most often occurred in the first week of ITP and were often caused by a rare pre-existing abnormality of the blood vessels in the head.

The risk of serious bleeding is much lower when the platelet count recovers to over What causes ITP? ITP commonly results due to the immune system mistaking platelets as being foreign and attacking the platelets. In many cases this may follow a viral infection or vaccination during which time the immune system attacks the virus but the immune system then goes on to think that the platelets are viral material and starts to attack the platelets.

How is ITP diagnosed? This is to rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms to ITP. If the platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells all look normal, this rules out leukaemia. If the low platelet count improves quickly and no treatment is needed, your child will not need any further tests.

If the platelet count is not showing signs of recovery by 3 to 6 months then a small sample of bone marrow will need to be taken and examined under the microscope. Additional blood tests may be taken at this time to exclude rare clotting or immune diseases that can mimic ITP.

If the bone marrow looks normal, with the usual or higher number of platelet parent cells megakaryocytes and other blood tests are normal then the doctor will diagnose chronic ITP. What is the outlook for children with ITP? Always consult your health care provider for a diagnosis. Historically, a bone marrow aspiration was required to make a diagnosis of ITP. It may not be absolutely necessary in the face of a positive antiplatelet antibody test, but it is still commonly done to look at the production of platelets and to rule out any abnormal cells the marrow may be producing that could lower platelet counts.

A bone marrow aspiration is necessary for a diagnosis if the antiplatelet antibody testing is negative. Specific treatment for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura will be determined by your health care provider based on:.

When treatment is necessary, the two most common forms of immediate treatment are steroids and intravenous gamma globulin:. Health Home Conditions and Diseases. Thrombocytopenia means a decreased number of platelets in the blood. Purpura refers to the purple discoloring of the skin, as with a bruise.

ITP is a fairly common blood disorder that both children and adults can develop. There are two forms of ITP: Acute thrombocytopenic purpura. This usually affects young children, ages 2 to 6 years old. The symptoms may follow a viral illness, such as chickenpox. Acute ITP usually starts suddenly and the symptoms usually disappear in less than 6 months, often within a few weeks. Treatment is often not needed. The disorder usually does not recur.

Acute ITP is the most common form of the disorder. Chronic thrombocytopenic purpura. The onset of the disorder can happen at any age, and the symptoms can last a minimum of 6 months, several years, or a lifetime. Adults have this form more often than children do, but it does affect adolescents.

Females have it more often than males. Chronic ITP can recur often and requires continual follow-up care with a blood specialist hematologist. What causes idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura?

This immune system error may be a result of any of the following: Medications including over-the-counter medications can cause an allergy that cross-reacts with platelets.

Infections, typically viral infections, including the viruses that cause chicken pox, hepatitis C, and AIDS, can prompt antibodies that cross-react with platelets. Pregnancy Immune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus Low-grade lymphomas and leukemias may produce abnormal antibodies against platelet proteins.

Sometimes the cause of immune thrombocytopenic purpura is not known. What are the symptoms of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura? Symptoms may include: The purple color of the skin after blood has "leaked" under it. A bruise is blood under the skin. Persons with ITP may have large bruises from no known injury. Bruises can appear at the joints of elbows and knees just from movement. Low-grade lymphomas and leukemias, which may make abnormal antibodies that attack platelets.

A normal platelet count is about , to , With ITP, the platelet count is less than , By the time major bleeding occurs, you may have a platelet count of less than 10, The lower your platelet count, the greater your risk of bleeding. Because platelets help stop bleeding, ITP symptoms are linked to increased bleeding. Symptoms may include:. Bruising or purple areas on the skin. These bruises called purpura are caused by bleeding under the skin.

When you have ITP, bruises may occur for no known reason. They can appear at elbow and knee joints just from movement. Bleeding in your head. This symptom of ITP is the most dangerous. ITP symptoms may look like other health problems. Always see your healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

Your healthcare provider will take your health history and give you a physical exam. Your provider may ask about any medicines you are taking that may cause bleeding or lower your platelet count. You may also have these tests:. Complete blood count CBC. This test checks the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in your blood.

With ITP, the red and white blood cell counts will be normal, but the platelet count will be low. Peripheral blood smear. This test is used as a follow-up test to an abnormal CBC. It checks different types of blood cells, in particular platelets for ITP. Other blood and urine tests. These tests are done to measure bleeding time and find possible infections.

Treatment will depend on your symptoms, age, and general health. It will also depend on how severe the condition is. When treatment is needed, the 2 most common forms of immediate treatment are steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin IVIG :. These medicines help prevent bleeding by slowing down platelet destruction. They can lead to a higher platelet count in 2 to 3 weeks. Side effects may include feeling grouchy, stomach irritation, weight gain, high blood pressure, and acne. Intravenous immunoglobulin IVIG.

IVIG is made of antibodies removed from blood donations from thousands of healthy donors. IVIG helps by increasing your platelet count. You may see a response in as little as 24 to 48 hours. Rh immune globulin. This medicine briefly stops the spleen from destroying platelets. You must be Rh positive and have a spleen for this medicine to work.

The feeling of disconnection from your partner can be used to find new horizons of communicating. Your sexless marriage can cause you to take a deep look at your integrity. It can teach you how to embody your deepest desires and how to truly want your partner and experience life-changing intimacy. Your relationship can be a foundation of profound growth and vitality. Our relationships have profound life lessons if we let them. My own relationships has caused me to face anxiety.

To stand in the threshold of what I thought was happening and open myself up to see what was actually happening. My intimate relationship taught me how to let my partner tell me what I am doing wrong as I swallowed my defensiveness and took a step into a new realm of loving my partner.

Happiness in our relationships does not come by finding the right partner, it requires you to become the right partner as well. This requires massive personal growth. It causes you to let someone depend on you. To behave in trustworthy ways that prove your commitment and reliability in the relationship.

To face the vulnerability of giving your heart to one person fully, without a secret life and without escape routes. Being the right partner is not an easy journey. But the emotional depth and growth you will experience will bring fulfillment beyond what you ever imagined. Facts matter less than feelings.

In an relationship, there are two roads of communicating. There is a fact and a feeling. As a guy, I have habitually clinged to the facts of what was going on in my relationship.

But our feelings are not some fact we can fact check; they are emotions. Because the feeling is what really matters. If your partner is angry, realize there tends to be a feeling of hurt underneath that anger.

Ask your partner why they are feeling hurt. As a basic need, we require love and affection, both in spoken word and in gentle touch, cuddles and hugs. A lack of intimacy can bring problems for a couple, particularly if it was once an important role in the relationship or if one partner is more intimate than the other.

Couples counselling can provide support during these very difficult times. Lacking emotional intimacy whilst the physical connection is thriving can develop complications with trust, anger, frustration, and confusion. In a similar breath, possessing a fiercely unique emotional intimacy without having physical intimacy, is incredibly difficult to maintain a relationship that has both individual and collective needs.

It's very common for one type of intimacy to be more important to one partner than the other or one partner more comfortable with intimacy. In this instance, couples often find themselves thinking all is well until one partner finally speaks up and lets them know that the intimacy levels are not what they should be.

Or, even more tragic, neither partner says anything and they find themselves ending the relationship without really knowing the true cause. If you can't be intimate with your partner, whether physically or emotionally or both , it will make having a lasting relationship with your partner difficult. Communication is at the heart of sexual intimacy. In the early days of the relationship, lust can often carry you through, but over time, sexual relationships can change. In healthy relationships, although the level of passion may decrease, the emotional connection gets deeper and more fulfilling; partners who are able to talk openly feel no inhibitions about sharing any concerns and expressing their needs and responses.

However, some couples, especially those who have never really discussed their sexual behaviour, struggle to accept and embrace change and may harbour feelings of disappointment or loss. Rather than talking about issues which they find uncomfortable or embarrassing, they can get into a routine in which lovemaking is in danger of becoming a routine chore and thus less rewarding for one or both partners. This lack of intimacy can cause support, understanding, loneliness and anger issues between a couple.

A relationship can survive without intimacy, but it will become a real struggle for both partners as time goes on; neither partner will be happy or feel secure in the relationship. Without happiness and security, the basis of a relationship is complicated. Once intimacy is lost or if it never existed in the relationship, it takes a lot of determination and commitment to get intimacy back in the relationship, but it's not impossible if both couples are committed.

When you make an effort to listen to someone and tell them how you really feel, you can build a deep understanding for each other. Mission accomplished! The more time you spend sharing experiences and feelings, the more elements you have to work with to build intimacy.

You might feel some apprehension, or even fear , about building intimacy. If anyone has ever violated your trust, it can take a while to want to take a chance with them or anyone else again.

It also helps your mental health , reducing your stress level as your feel-good hormones get a boost from touch like hugs and emotional release like laughter.

In fact, intimacy can actually boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, and reduce your risk for heart disease. You might avoid deep relationships or feel anxious about social situations for reasons that are unclear. Do you isolate yourself from other people? Have low self-esteem? Have a hard time staying present during sex? Avoid letting people get to know you?

Once you can spot a pattern, identifying your symptoms will give you a tangible list of what to work on. Many people find it useful to work with a therapist or other mental health professional to help guide you. For example, fear of intimacy would be an understandable response to trauma like sexual assault or childhood neglect. After abuse, we may try to protect ourselves from judgment and further harm by isolating from the rest of the world.

At times we can all use some support with facing our fears. A mental health professional like a therapist can offer that. Take time to tell the other person what you appreciate about them. The key to this is listening so you can build a real understanding of what the other person cares about and why. Plan a weekly date night, a monthly board game night, or a nightly moment to check in one-on-one before bedtime, away from the kids or other responsibilities. Spending time together without electronics can give you a chance to give each other some undivided attention.

If you have a sexual relationship, then mixing things up with new toys, outfits, and fantasies can keep things from getting dull. Restore a piece of furniture, learn a new skill like baking , or teach your old dog some new tricks. Whatever the project, working toward a goal with a loved one can cultivate bonding time, make invaluable memories, and give you something new to look forward to together.

Listen when they tell you the same.
